Plessey presents solid-state lighting products in collaboration with Zeta Specialist Lighting

Plymouth, ENGLAND 20th November, 2014 – Plessey today announced that it will be presenting the results of its partnership with Zeta Specialist Lighting to visitors at LuxLive, which takes place at ExCel London, 19th-20th November.

At its LuxLive booth, Plessey will be showcasing Zeta’s ZD LED Bulkhead, a new solid-state lighting product based on Plessey pioneering GaN-on-Si MaGICTM LED die, made at the firm’s state-of-the-art semiconductor manufacturing facility in Plymouth. The Zeta ZD LED Bulkhead eliminates point source glare and solves any heating issues associated with LED lighting in an IP rated housing. It also offers higher efficiency; leading to longer lamp life and dramatically reduced maintenance and energy consumption costs.

This combined innovation is the result of a three-year collaboration between Zeta Specialist Lighting, the Bicester-based developer and manufacturer of award winning LED and solar powered lighting systems and Plessey, following Zeta securing grant approval from the UK Government under the Advanced Manufacturing Supply Chain Initiative (AMSCI) in 2013.

Zeta Specialist Lighting designs, develops and manufactures intelligent, robust and reliable engineered products suited to a wide range of applications. From LED solutions that lower energy bills and carbon emissions for customers across the world, including custom luminaires for street lighting, amenity lighting, signage and LED commercial lighting solutions; to the design and manufacture of complete solar lighting solutions.

Zeta’s Managing Director Phil Shadbolt said, “We are very excited about this partnership which will result in the availability of more advanced, UK manufactured LED technology becoming available. As the lead partner in the project we have invested heavily in plant and machinery, test equipment and staff, and the imminent launch of the Zeta ZD LED Bulkhead with Plessey’s GaN-on-Si MaGIC LEDs is the first of many new lighting innovations. Working in partnership, it is our aim to incorporate Plessey die into as many Zeta products as possible in the future.”

David Owen, Plessey’s Marketing Director said, “Plessey is pleased to be working closely with a company such as Zeta here in the UK.  Zeta has an excellent reputation for high quality and innovation and has won several awards for its lighting products. Recent performance improvements in the efficacy of our LEDs have enabled Plessey’s GaN-on-Silicon MaGIC LEDs to be competitive with any LED technology. Plessey’s technology has already shown how we can overcome what up to now has been a significant cost barrier in large-scale LED illumination, as a result we are seeing our LEDs being used in exciting new product developments, like the Zeta ZD LED Bulkhead”.

Plessey’s range of products for lighting applications will be showcased at LuxLive, ExCel London, 19-20 November, Stand D31. The show will open on Wednesday 19th November from 9am to 9pm and on Thursday 20th November from 9am to 5pm. The show is free to attend. For free tickets please visit:

There will be innovative demonstrations by technical and design experts for Plessey’s LED technology at the stand. This is an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Plessey’s latest products and solutions for the commercial, industrial, consumer and wearable lighting segments.

Plessey’s MaGIC™ (Manufactured on GaN-on-Si I/C) High Brightness LED (HBLED) technology has won numerous awards for its innovation and ability to cut the cost of LED lighting by using standard silicon manufacturing techniques.
