First solar-powered advertising billboards launch in Birmingham

Clear Channel UK has used the industry’s first LED trough lighting system that’s entirely powered by solar, to illuminate two advertising billboards in Birmingham. The ECOLUX SOLAR, jointly developed by Zeta Specialist Lighting and Portland Lighting was designed specifically to provide an optimum solar powered LED lighting solution for outdoor signage where mains-fed power isn’t an option.

The ECOLUX SOLAR incorporates discreet and flexible PV solar panels which harness the sun’s energy throughout the day and power the long life maintenance-free batteries. Zeta’s patented innovative Energy Management System (EMS) releases the stored energy, uses it to power the high intensity LED trough light and illuminate the billboard. This flexible solution provides even illumination, reduces light pollution and comes with easy to fit brackets, it can also include PIR movement sensors for added flexibility.

Ecolux-Solar-Through-LightZeta’s Managing Director Adrian Dennis said: “With the ECOLUX SOLAR, we’re bringing the cost of installing trough lighting right down, as well as opening up the opportunity to illuminate outdoor signage in settings where there is no on-grid connection or where the cost of laying cabling would be prohibitive.”

Portland Lighting’s Managing Director Dave Harrison said: “We expect to see a wide adoption of this robust, durable and virtually maintenance-free sign illumination solution.”

A spokesperson for Clear Channel UK added: “We are extremely proud of the introduction of our first solar-powered billboard in Birmingham, which represents the latest in our commitment to combining the latest Out of Home technologies with our responsibility to the environment, allowing us to create innovative products that promote sustainable development and offer dynamic advertising opportunities.”
